I tried knitting when I was little - with those big clumsy 'safe' knitting needles they give kids, or through a tube with nails at the top - is that 'french knitting'? I don't remember getting very far with knitting - just long knitted worms - but I love the idea of woven threads and textures and yarns. And the colours! I wanted to start knitting again and stumbled across a knitting group near where I live, took a deep breath (feeling shy), emailed the group and turned up one night at one of their meetings. A unique and interesting group of ladies greeted me and they were so happy to help me learn knitting all over again, it was lovely. The group meets EVERY Monday evening at a local cafe and their various projects are just amazing! I hadn't seen circular needles or a ball winder before (yes, I am a knitting novice). Feeling like I was spongeing off their good-will and knitting knowledge a bit too much, my sister Jess and I enrolled in a two-week Learning to Knit class at a (beautiful!) local fabric shop - it turned out the class was made up of just the two of us and was a good introduction (or cast on..) to knitting. Jess and I have tried to commit to meeting once a week to continue our knitting and this is our first completed project (I am hoping sometime I will look back at this post and laugh hysterically at my first completed knitting effort - you have to start somewhere though!)...
The picture is a bit yellow and not that great but it's a Flower Brooch based on this Jo Sharp pattern. Here's the one from Jo Sharp's Knit Issue 3...
I didn't use the suggested yarn for mine but it was nice to use a yarn that showed up each stitich so I could see what I was doing. It's a great project too to learn increasing and decreasing stitiches. Our next project is a round button cushion, which is also a Jo Sharp pattern and is just devine! Let's see if it turns out anything like the picture in the book!
